Is February the best month in Winnipeg?

February is arguably the best month in Winnipeg. There are so many winter activities going on, it goes by almost too fast. The days are getting longer, the cold days are usually the sunniest, and Winnipeggers get to really enjoy the winter for all that it is good for. Right now, the skating trail at The Forks stretches from Hugo Street on the Assiniboine all the way to the Manitoba Canoe Kayak Centre on Churchill Drive (6km total). There are a few new warming huts out there this year, including a structure made completely out of ice blocks, and a warming hut with an actual wood stove in it and cedar walls.

This past Sunday was The Great Skate, an event organized by Dr. Page and November Project Winnipeg. It was a 5km skating race on the river trail, with a brunch in the marketplace afterwards hosted by Nuburger, Tall Grass Prairie and The Common.

As usual, Dr. Carter’s husband came first in the race. However, it was a close finish!

Some of our patients even came out for the race, braving the cold and showing off their skating skills!

There are quite a few events coming up for the rest of February.

  • The Wild Winter Canoe Race on February 20th (Dr. Page has a team in already).
  • Festival du Voyageur, from February 17th until the 26th.
  • Ice Dragon Boat Festival on February 25th at the MCKC on Churchill Drive. (Dr. Page has a team in for this as well)
  • The Ice Climbing tower at Whittier Park is now open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays ($40 per person)
  • A whole array of events at The Forks, including Breakfast on Ice and the Rendez-vous on Ice

Wild winter canoe

The Wild Winter Canoe Race is a race where five people push a canoe ‘skateboard style’ for 200 metres. There are prizes for top fundraisers and best costumes as well as great prizes for top 3 finishers, including a trip to Churchill by ViaRail. It’s $300 for a team of five to enter ($60 each). This is for a great cause, Inclusion Winnipeg. Get a team in and come join in on the fun!

We have some cool promotions and contests coming up in clinic, so stay posted! There will be a chance to win a standing desk for your workplace, and tickets to see me suiting up and walking on the runway as a (super) model in a fashion show to support the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

Yesterday was Katelyn’s last day at our office. We will miss her very much! Our new receptionist is Aly.
